President Muhammadu Buhari warned on Tuesday that Nigeria would not tolerate attempts by persons and organisations he called international criminals to defraud the country. He also stressed that his administration would sustain its anti-corruption fight. Buhari cited Federal Government’s prosecution of Process and Industrial Development over the controversial $9.6bn judgment it obtained from a London court against Nigeria as an example of “a scam.” He was speaking at the General Debate of the ongoing 74th Session of United Nations General Assembly in New York. Buhari told the session that the world was facing various crises, including financial crimes, and called…

Keyamo removed as Niger Delta minister, redeployed

Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs, Mr Festus Keyamo, has been redeployed to Ministry of Labour and Employment about one month after his assumption of office. A statement from Director of Information at Office of Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Willie Bassey, said Keyamo would replace Mr Tayo Alasoadura as Minister of State at the labour ministry, while Alasoadura replaced him at Niger Delta Affairs ministry. The statement said President Muhammadu Buhari has approved of the swap. It said, “President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the immediate redeployment of two Ministers of State as follows. “Mr Festus…
President Muhammadu Buhari has asked state governors not to fix federal roads if they will eventually demand refund for the rehabilitation. Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, made this known on Tuesday in Abuja when he appeared before the House of Representatives’ Ad Hoc Committee on Abandoned Federal Government Projects (Works) from 1999 till date. According to the minister, the President issued the directive due to the humongous amounts being claimed by the governors after repairing federal roads in their states. Fashola said, “The states submitted a bill of almost a trillion naira when President Buhari was elected.…

Court orders Sowore’s release

A court in Abuja on Tuesday ordered State Security Service to release activist and former presidential candidate Mr Omoyele Sowore while charges of treason against him are pending. Security agents arrested Sowore in early August after he called for a revolution. He said it was needed because an election held in February, in which President Muhammadu Buhari won a second term, was not credible. Mr Buhari, a former military ruler, faces criticism for his administration’s record on human rights, particularly a deadly crackdown on members of a now-banned Shi’ite group that a United Nations special rapporteur said involved the excessive…

Boko Haram now rules over 8 LGs in Borno - Reps

Despite claims by federal government that it has “technically” defeated Boko Haram and that the terror group was no longer in control of any territory, two members of House of Representatives from Borno State, the epicentre of the insurgency, yesterday told the House that eight local government areas in the state were under the control of the insurgents. They expressed concerns about the spike in the deadly activities of the terrorist group, saying the insurgents have refreshed their expansionist quest and continued to sustain control over more local government areas/communities in the state. House Chief Whip, Mr Mohammed Monguno, representing…
In a decision that badly undermines Boris Johnson’s authority, Britain’s highest court ruled unanimously Tuesday that the prime minister broke the law by suspending Parliament in a way that squelched legitimate scrutiny of his Brexit plan. The historic move by the U.K. Supreme Court offered a ringing endorsement of Parliament’s sovereignty and slapped down what justices viewed as the legislature’s silencing by the executive. The ruling upended the prime minister’s plan to keep lawmakers away until two weeks before Britain is due to leave the European Union. The Supreme Court said Johnson’s suspension was “void” and never legally took effect,…
Kabir Sabo’s sewing machine hums busily as he hems a “babariga,” a popular dress in northern Nigeria, in his small corner shop on the outskirts of Abuja. It can hardly be heard over the sound of Nigeria’s worst problem. Sabo’s noisy electricity generator costs him an average of 3,000 naira ($8.30) a day in fuel, he says. That’s the bulk of the roughly 4,000 naira he makes daily. “When you are a small business owner in a country where there is no power, it really is depressing,” he said. “I have on multiple occasions shut down to take up a…
Nigeria is gripped by a crisis that has left Africa’s most populous country ill-equipped to properly house its inhabitants, said a United Nations rapporteur who also called for an end to the forced evictions of entire communities. United Nations estimates that Nigeria’s population is set to double by 2050 to around 400 million people, which would make it the world’s third-largest nation, behind India and China. Against this backdrop, there was a lack of adequate housing in a country where most inhabitants live on less than $2 a day despite the nation having Africa’s largest economy, said Leilani Farha, special…
Britain, France and Germany joined the United States on Monday in blaming Iran for attacks on key oil facilities in Saudi Arabia, but the Iranian foreign minister pointed to claims of responsibility by Yemeni rebels and said: “If Iran were behind this attack, nothing would have been left of this refinery.” Fallout from the Sept. 14 attacks is still reverberating as world leaders gather for their annual meeting at the U.N. General Assembly and international experts investigate, at Saudi Arabia’s request, what happened and who was responsible. The leaders of the United Kingdom, France and Germany released a statement reaffirming…
Iran has rejected a joint statement by the leaders of France, Germany and the UK who blamed it for attacks earlier this month on Saudi oil installations. Iran's foreign minister accused them of "parroting absurd US claims". The European leaders said there was no other plausible explanation for the attacks, which shut down half of Saudi Arabia's oil production. But they said they remained committed to the 2015 international deal on Iran's nuclear programme. Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi rebels have claimed they carried out the 14 September attacks while Iran itself has denied any involvement. Eighteen drones and seven cruise missiles…
