Award of Nigeria’s highest national honour to late Mr Moshood Abiola is illegal, a former Chief Justice of Nigeria has said. President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday evening named Abiola, winner of 1993 presidential election that was annulled by former dictator Mr Ibrahim Babangida, a holder of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, GCFR, 20 years after his death in 1998. Alfa Belgore, CJN from 2006-2007, said national honours cannot be awarded posthumously, much less GCFR, which is the highest honour in the land. “It is not done,” Belgore said on telephone Wednesday night. “It is for people living.” “The only…
Two-time Governor of Ogun State Mr Olusegun Osoba said: “I am very happy and highly elated. It is a major thing to accept Abiola as president of Nigeria not sworn in. The honour of GCFR is reserved for presidents. Mr Obafemi Awolowo, who was the best president we never had, got it also without being president. I salute the President for the honour given to Mr Baba Gana Kingibe. GCON is always given to vice presidents. “The acceptance of June 12 as ‘Democracy day’ is in recognition of the supreme price Abiola paid. It has elevated Abiola to the status…
Senate, House of Representatives, Taraba, Ekiti and Benue state governments on Wednesday berated Minister of Defence, Mr Musur Dan-Ali, for calling on state governments to suspend their anti-open grazing laws, discribing the call as illegal. While Senate and Benue State Government asked the minister to withdraw his statement, Taraba and Ekiti states rejected the call by Dan-Ali. The minister, after a security council meeting at Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday, had said the suspension of the laws would reduce tension. Anti-open grazing law is currently operational in Benue, Ekiti and Taraba states. Dan-Ali, in a statement by his Public…
What was supposed to be a serious-toned letter from President Muhammadu Buhari to Senate, turned out to be a comic relief at the upper chamber on Wednesday. Mr Buhari had written to the Senate about the ”Transmission of the Deep Offshore and Inland Basin Production Sharing Contracts Amendment Bill 2018”. As is the custom, Senate President, Mr Bukola Saraki, read out the letter to lawmakers. As soon as he mentioned the first word, “transmission,” he and all the lawmakers burst into laughter. It took a few moments for Saraki to compose himself and re-read the letter. “Let me start again,”…
The federal government has increased maternity leave to four months. Under the Labour Law passed in 2004, a woman working in the country’s civil service has the right to maternity leave of three months, as long as she provides a medical certificate stating she should not or cannot work. The medical certificate allows her to stay off work for 12 weeks – six weeks before the birth of her baby and six weeks after. Minister of Labour and Employment, Mr Chris Ngige, announced extension to the leave Tuesday while addressing plenary session at ongoing 107th International Labour Conference in Geneva,…

Nigeria safe, secure – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday in Abuja declared that Nigeria is safe and secure for tourism, citing improved security and country’s burgeoning economy. Receiving Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) at Presidential Villa, the president said it would have been inconceivable to host an international tourism conference in Abuja four years ago, because of security concerns. ‘‘I am pleased that the country is now sufficiently safe and secure, and the message should go out to the world for all tourists and business travellers. The first thing tourists look out for is security and I am happy we…
Amidst growing concern over rising security challenges, President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday met behind closed doors with the nation’s security chiefs. Those who attended the meeting inside one of the conference halls of the President’s office included Minister of Defence, Mr Mansur Dan Ali; National Security Adviser, Mr Babagana Monguno; and Chief of Defence Staff, Mr Abayomi Olonisakin. Others were Chief of Army Staff, Mr Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Mr Ibok Ekwe Ibas; a representative of Chief of Air Staff, Mr Sadique Abubakar; Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris; and Director-General of National Intelligence Agency, Mr Ahmed Abubakar.…
There was a mild drama on Banana Island Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos State, on Saturday after residents waylaid Chief of Army Staff, Mr Tukur Buratai, who had allegedly visited the estate to inaugurate a project. Buratai, our correspondent learnt, had been invited by Nigerian Army Properties Limited to commission an estate, Apple Island, inside Banana Island, when the residents mobilised against the inauguration. The Chief of Army Staff, who was taken aback by the blockage, appealed to the protesters, who alleged militarisation of the estate and destruction of their jetty by soldiers. “I was actually supposed to come here yesterday (Friday)…
President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Mr Adamu Abdu-Kafarati as Chief Judge of Federal High Court. He wrote a letter to the Senate requesting the confirmation of Abdu-Kafarati’s appointment. Abdu-Kafarati was sworn-in as Acting Chief Judge of Federal High Court in September 2017. His swearing-in was sequel to the president’s failure to nominate a successor to the former Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Mr Ibrahim Auta who was due to retire on September 16, 2017. The Senate had in March urged Mr Buhari to forward nomination of Abdu-Kafarati to the upper legislative chamber for approval as substantive Chief Judge…
