A Nigerian woman has lost her job a week after criticising Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and President Muhammadu Buhari’s wife, Aisha, on Twitter. In the July 5, 2017 tweet, Ms Bolouere Opukiri described then-Acting President Osinbajo as ‘a novice’ for travelling out of the country at a time President Muhammadu Buhari was receiving medical treatment in London and tension was flaring between the executive and the legislature. Senators had criticised Mr Osinbajo’s trip the day before, with Mr Enyinnaya Abaribe of Abia saying it created “a vacuum” that Senate President Bukola Saraki should step in to fill. In another post…
Presidency has advised state governors and others opposed to the bill on water resources sent to Senate by President Muhammadu Buhari to express their opposition to the bill through the National Assembly. Toothpaste is one of many household products we use daily that containes the antimicrobial chemical triclosan. A recent study suggests that this chemical may aggravate inflammation in the gut and contribute to colon cancer for humans, as it did in mice. Triclosan is almost impossible to avoid — it's in hand soaps, body wash, kitchenware, and even some toys. This could mean health authorities will need to regulate the chemical's widespread use in products. After a week of hard-nosed negotiation, diplomatic gamesmanship and no shortage of theatrics, President Donald Trump announced Friday that the historic nuclear-weapons summit he had canceled with North Korea's Kim Jong Un is back on. The June 12 meeting in Singapore, the first between heads of the technically still-warring nations, is meant to begin the process of ending North Korea's nuclear program, and Trump said he believes Kim is committed to that goal. The announcement puts back on track a high-risk summit that could be a legacy-defining moment for the American leader, who has matched his unconventional deal-making style with…
Deputy Senate President, Mr Ike Ekweremadu, has explained that the 35 years age qualification for the Senate and governorship was retained to correct the initial disparity in the 1999 Constitution between the age requirement for Senate and Presidency. Qualifying age for the Presidency, which used to be 40 years, has now been reduced to 35. The new law is aimed at relaxing some of the stringent and discriminatory provisions of the constitution. The bill was passed by National Assembly last year to alter Sections 65, 106, 131, 177 of the constitution, and it sought to reduce the age qualification for…
Only 5,253 candidates out of the over 37,000 who sat for the police recruitment examination last week Friday made the cut for the next stage of the process, a list released by the agency shows. The successful candidates have been directed to report for medical screening between May 31 and June 3. Given the initial announcement that President Muhammadu Buhari gave approval for recruitment of 6,000 new officers, it remains unclear how the police authorities intend to come about the balance of the list they just released, even if all the candidates pass their medicals. Police Service Commission had said…
