Despite continuing efforts of the Federal Government to evacuate stranded Nigerians from Libya, efforts which have been on since 2016 with over 2,000 Nigerians assisted back home, more Nigerians still throng the North African country. International Organization for Migration (IOM), a United Nations humanitarian agency, has been collaborating with National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other agencies of government to return Nigerians back home. From 2006 till date, no fewer than 42 trips have been carried out to bring back stranded thousands of Nigerians, with virtually all of them recounting horrible experiences in Libyan detention facilities. Most of them spent…
President Muhammadu Buhari says there is tremendous improvement in his health, indeed, he wishes to return home, "but I've learnt to obey my doctor's orders, rather than be the one issuing the orders. Here, the doctor is absolutely in charge." The President spoke while receiving the presidential media team, and Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Matters, at Abuja House, London, on Saturday. Mr Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, led the visiting team, accompanied by Mr Femi Adesina, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity; Mr Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, and Mrs Lauretta Onochie, Personal…
Former President Olusegun Obansanjo on Saturday at Apostolic Faith Church said that Christians should be prepared for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ as the end of the world is near. Obasanjo made this remark during 2017 Camp Meeting Concert by Apostolic Faith Church Choir and Orchestral at the Camp Ground Igbesa in Ogun State. He said that as a person, he would like to make to heaven so as to sing with the angels. “You have to be fully prepared for the second coming of our Lord, there is no compromise. “I have a friend who will always say…
The Federal Government says it will come up with security plans that will guarantee the safety of lives and property in worship centres across the country. Mr Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment, said this in Amakwa, Ozubulu in Ekwusigo council when he led a delegation to commiserate with the people and government of Anambra on Saturday over last week’s attack in a church. The delegation was led to St. Philips Catholic Church by Mr Nkem Okeke, Deputy Governor of Anambra and Mr Hillary Okeke, Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese. Ngige said the Federal Government would cooperate with Anambra…
Almost all federal ministries, departments and agencies have been carrying out illegal mass recruitments. Many government parastatals including Central Bank of Nigeria, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Federal Inland Revenue Service, and Nigerian Prisons Service, among others have been dogged by recruitment scandals which they have vehemently denied. A document obtained by our correspondent showed that following a review carried out by the Ministry of Finance, 183 out of 185 MDAs had recruited 13,780 staff in recent years. Out of this number, 6,917 were recruited without any formal approval; 2,314 were employed by seven universities with governing council approval; only while…
Chinese President Xi Jinping made a plea for cool-headedness over escalating tensions between the U.S. and North Korea in a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday, urging both sides to avoid words or actions that could worsen the situation. The call came after Trump unleashed a slew of fresh threats against North Korea on Friday, declaring the U.S. military "locked and loaded" and warning North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that he "will regret it fast" if he takes any action against U.S. territories or allies. Trump has pushed China to pressure North Korea to halt a…
Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Saturday sent a five-man Federal Government delegation to Anambra State to visit and condole with the government and people of the state over last Sunday’s attack on worshippers at St. Philips Catholic Church in Ofufe-Amakwa, Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of the state. Nigerian soldiers conducted an unauthorized search of a United Nations humanitarian base in the city where the Boko Haram insurgency began, the U.N. said Friday, expressing "grave concern" over the military's actions. Aid groups and Nigerian officials at times have been at odds in their approaches to the vast crisis in the country's northeast, where millions have been uprooted during Boko Haram's deadly eight-year insurgency. "The humanitarian crisis in Nigeria's northeast is one of the most severe in the world today," Edward Kallon, U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Nigeria, said in a statement. "I am extremely concerned that these actions could…
Some bishops have asked President Muhammadu Buhari to resign from office because of his ill health. The bishops also reprimanded the Presidency for persistently refusing to disclose Buhari’s health status, saying they were in support of protesters demanding the President’s resignation. Since Monday, the ‘resume or resign’ protesters — backed by a popular artiste, Charles Oputa (also known as Charly Boy) — had accused Buhari’s handlers of holding him captive. The protesters had also advised the President to demonstrate his “touted integrity” by resigning from office as it was evident he wasn’t physically fit to carry on the number one…
In spite of his obvious infirmity, loyalists to Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari are prepared to campaign for his re-election in 2019. But they may be in for a resounding defeat if numbers from the latest Guardian Poll and rounds of protests in the nation’s capital, which entered the fourth day yesterday, are anything to go by. There is a growing level of disenchantment with the Buhari government which came into power on the wings of promises to reposition the country by fighting corruption, improving security and remodelling the economy. While appreciable progress has been recorded in the fight against insurgency…
