Only 11 of Nigeria’s 36 state legislatures have considered and voted on the 44 constitution amendment bills passed by the National Assembly earlier in the year. The states whose houses of assembly have voted on the bills are Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Delta, Edo, Kaduna, Katsina, Kogi, Lagos, Ogun and Osun states. This comes about six months after the bills were passed and transmitted to the states for their legislative votes. Twenty-five other states have failed to consider the bills. The states have threatened to take no action on the bills unless four more constitutional amendment bills are considered and…
Zamfara state in northwestern Nigeria ordered five media outlets to close on Sunday after they covered a political rally for the opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP), which took place in violation of a state ban on political activities. The order to close came after Governor Bello Metawalle, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress, banned political activities, including meetings at individuals' homes, on October 13 due to the security situation in the state. The ban includes campaigning for February 2023 presidential elections, which began nationwide last month. Zamfara state, along with much of northwestern Nigeria, is battling armed groups…
An interview with an outsider who says he will actually do something about corruption “This is a case of Goliath and David,” says Peter Obi, a long-shot candidate who has unexpectedly taken the lead in the race to become president of Africa’s most populous country. “The big people are there, but allow this small person to do it. And I know I can do it.” As public campaigning was about to begin in late September, Nigeria was rocked by the release of three polls showing Obi well ahead of the two candidates for the main parties that have misruled Nigeria…
Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president, says northerners need a president who hails from the north. Abubakar, who is the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), spoke on Saturday at the interactive session of the Arewa townhall policy dialogue in Kaduna. Abubakar, who hails from Adamawa in the northeast, told his audience which included a significant percentage of persons of Hausa and Fulani extraction, that they don’t need an Igbo or Yoruba as president but “someone from the north”. The former vice-president said he had criss-crossed Nigeria’s 36 states and understands their peculiarities and diversities. Atiku said northerners should trust…
China's 20th Communist Party Congress kicked off on Sunday, with Xi Jinpingpoised to clinch his third five-year stint in charge - a mandate that would secure his stature as the country's most powerful ruler since founding leader Mao Zedong. * Xi began a speech opening the week-long session touting the ruling party's safeguarding of national security, maintaining social stability, protecting people's lives and taking control of the situation in Hong Kong, which was rocked by anti-government protests in 2019. * China will unwaveringly support the private economy and let the market play decisive role in resource allocation, Xi said. *…
The Federal High Court sitting in Yola has nullified the ticket of the All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Adamawa State, Aishatu Binani, for the 2023 general elections. In a ruling on Friday, the court presided by A.M Anka asked Binani to desist from parading herself as the APC candidate in the state. Anka ruled that the primary election was void due to the issue of over-voting and fielding of delegates from Lamurde Local Government Area where a congress was not conducted. A former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Nuhu Ribadu, who contested at the primary…
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said new Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) would be made available by November. At a National Endowment for Democracy event in Washington DC in the United States, INEC Chairman, Mahmoud Yakubu, said 2.7 million double registrations were weeded out of the last Continuous Voters Registration exercise conducted by the commission and about 50% of the new PVCs are ready but yet to be distributed to collection centres. He also raised concerns about the rising levels of insecurity across the country, saying the Commission has its fingers crossed. “It is a perennial issue because, at the…
Governors, ex-governors, and top chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party in the camp of the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar, and his running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa, on Monday, arrived in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, in no fewer than 15 private and chartered jets for the formal inauguration of the party’s campaign ahead of the 2023 poll. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the nomination of Bola Tinubu as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is “invalid, null and void”. In a statement released on Saturday by Debo Ologunagba, the party’s national publicity secretary, the PDP hinged the illegality of Tinubu’s nomination on a September 30, 2022 judgement which nullified the actions of Mai Mala Buni. Buni, the Yobe state governor, is the immediate past chairman of the APC national caretaker committee. Under his leadership, the party conducted a convention which produced Abdullahi Adamu as the national chairman. In June, the Adamu-led executive conducted a…
