Who; me, Senate? Never! - El- Rufai

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has explained why he would never contest election to the Senate to become a lawmaker like some of his colleagues in the country. He said he does not have the patience to function in that capacity, adding that a lawmaker requires hard work, unlike the executive where decisions could be taken with the right to hire and fire. El-Rufai spoke at the Distinguished Parliamentarians Lecture 2022 organised by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in Abuja on Monday. He was the Chairman of the event. “The legislature is one I know…

Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, has accused Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, of targeting the political class with the cash withdrawal limit policy unveiled by the apex bank on Tuesday. Controversies have continued to trail the planned policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria to limit daily cash withdrawal for individuals to N20,000 daily and N100,000 and N500,000 per week for individuals and corporate bodies respectively. But Governor Fintiri, who was reacting to the new CBN policy during a campaign engagement in Kala’a, Hong Local Government Area, said it was evident that the policy by Emefiele was targeted at…
Federal government will not allow intimidation to gain votes in next February's presidential election, President Muhammadu Buhari said on Tuesday. Nigerians will head to the polls on Feb. 25 to select a successor to Buhari, who cannot run because the constitution does not permit him to serve more than two consecutive terms. Bola Tinubu from Buhari's ruling All Progressives Congress party, main opposition People's Democratic Party's Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi from the smaller Labour Party are the main contenders. Past elections have been marred by deadly violence and intimidation, ballot snatching, vote buying and allegations of rigging, which have…
The electioneering of the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, took an intriguing twist on Monday at the Chatham House in London as he delegated some members of the party to respond to questions posed to him. Tinubu was in Chatham House to speak to Nigerians in the Diaspora on why he should be elected in 2023. After his presentation which was livestreamed on Arise TV, some members of the audience asked him some questions bordering on insecurity, oil theft, education and economy and how he planned to address crises in those areas if he became…

The Saudi prince was detained all night. As daylight broke, he staggered out of the king’s palace in Mecca. His personal bodyguards, who tailed him everywhere, were missing. The prince was led to a waiting car. He was free to leave – but he would soon discover that freedom was not very different from detention. As his car pulled out of the palace gates, Prince Mohammed bin Nayef fired off a series of panicked text messages. “Be very careful! Don’t come back!” he wrote to his most trusted adviser, who had quietly slipped out of the kingdom just weeks earlier.…
Osun state house of assembly says the state will continue to be referred to as ‘state of Osun’ as against ‘Osun state’. The development was announced on Monday in a statement by Kunle Akande, the house committee chairman on media and publicity. In his inauguration speech on Sunday, Ademola Adeleke, the Osun governor, ordered an immediate reversal to ‘Osun state’ instead of ‘state of Osun’, which was adopted during the Rauf Aregbesola administration. Speaking on the development, the Osun assembly said the adoption of ‘state of Osun’ is “a matter of law”. “The usage of the state anthem, crest and…
The Court of Appeal in Abuja has affirmed the nomination of Bashir Sheriff Machina as the authentic candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Yobe North Senatorial District. A three-member panel led by Monica Dagban-Mensah on Monday upheld the judgment of the Federal High Court in Damaturu, which had earlier upheld Machina’s nomination. The appellate court observed that the APC argued its case and that of Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, in its brief, but failed to make him a co-appellant, instead of being the 2nd respondent. Lawan, who lost the APC presidential primary to a former Lagos governor, Bola…
The Court of Appeal in Ibadan, Oyo State has reinstated Oladipupo Adebutu as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State. The court also reinstated the three senatorial candidates, nine House of Representatives and 26 House of Assembly candidates, who all emerged from the party’s primaries. It would be recalled that O. O. Oguntoyinbo of the Federal High Court Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, had on September 27, declared the primaries that produced Adebutu and other PDP candidates invalid. The court ordered the party to conduct fresh primaries within 14 days. Adebutu and the PDP, however,…
