Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, presidential candidate of New Nigerian People Party (NNPP), has knocked All Progressive Congress (APC) governors criticising President Muhammadu Buhari over naira redesign policy. Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) which introduced the policy last year had fixed January 31 as deadline for spending old N200, N500 and N1000 notes in public. This had generated a huge controversy. After intense pressure, the apex bank shifted the deadline by 10 days. Some governors of the ruling party sought the intervention of the president, who told them to give him seven days to take action. But three days after meeting Buhari,…
Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, has disowned a statement on social media linking him to the endorsement of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu. The social media post also purportedly indicated that the elder statesman described the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, in uncharitable words. The statement had claimed that Soyinka said, “Quote me anywhere, Nigerians don’t need the like of Atiku and Obasanjo to lead them again. We have tested the two: Atiku is corrupt and Obasanjo is a liar. Both of them are greedy and self-centered…. “Anybody, any cabal,…
Obi, obi, obi” chants the bouncing crowd, fists in the air, as Peter Obi strides into a campaign rally after having unexpectedly taken a lead in the race to become the next president of Nigeria. The outcome of the election, scheduled for February 25th, will reverberate far beyond Nigeria’s borders. A free and fair vote in the continent’s biggest democracy would send a telling signal across Africa, where freedom is in retreat in a number of countries after a spate of coups, rigged votes and the abandonment of presidential term limits. The stakes in this race are especially high for…
Nigeria has been cursed with bad rulers. A military regime gave way to democracy in 1999, but since then elections have offered voters an ugly selection of the ancient, the incompetent and, most recently, a former military dictator. Parties have stoked ethnic divisions, intimidated their opponents and bought votes. Many candidates—federal, state and local—seek power to grab a share of the country’s oil wealth. Successive governments have been deeply corrupt. Turnout has steadily fallen. But as Nigerians go to the polls on February 25th, Peter Obi, a third-party presidential candidate, offers a measure of hope. Africa’s most populous country is…
A survey by Enough Is Enough (EiE), a civil society organisation (CSO), and SBM Intelligence, a research firm, has predicted a likely victory for Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a report published on Friday, the organisations said the election forecast was based on a survey of 11,534 respondents across all 36 states and the federal capital territory (FCT). According to the survey, Tinubu could win the popular vote depending on turnout in key states in the southwest and northwest. The report added that there is a possibility of the country experiencing its first-ever run-off…
The Presidency Friday said there was no truth to the claim that President Muhammadu Buhari was working towards the truncation of democracy through the installation of an interim government. Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said this in a statement titled “Stop the Joke about Interim Government, Elections Will Hold.” While Governor Umar Ganduje of Kano State had alleged that the naira redesign policy of Buhari was aimed at truncating Nigeria’s democracy, his counterpart in Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, claimed the scarcity of naira notes was a part of the plots to disrupt the…

INEC submits cash request to CBN - Official

Independent National Electoral Commission says it has presented its cash requirement for prosecuting the forthcoming elections to the Central Bank of Nigeria, as requested by the apex bank. It expressed hope that its demand would be met with a positive response. Chief Press secretary to INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, told our correspondent in an interview on Friday that even though the commission does most of its payments through online transfers, some specific services had to be paid for in cash. INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, had recently visited CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, to seek the apex bank’s support toward a hitch-free…
Nigeria's electoral commission head said on Monday that 240 polling centres will not be used in upcoming elections, as no one had chosen them due to insecurity in the surrounding areas. Separatist and gang violence is a major concern for Nigerians when they vote on Feb. 25 for new members of parliament and for a successor to President Muhammadu Buhari. When new voters register in Nigeria, they are allowed to choose a polling centre. Most people choose the nearest to where they live because movement is restricted by security agencies on election day. Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Mahmood…
The Lagos mega rally organised by the Presidential Campaign Council of the Labour Party for its flagbearer and former Anambra governor, Peter Obi, on Saturday, was marred by violence. Several supporters of the candidate told our correspondents that they were attacked by hoodlums on their way to the Tafawa Balewa Square, the venue of the mega rally. But the state Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Seye Oladejo, in a statement denied involvement of the party in the attacks. He said, “It is irresponsible and reckless of the tottering party to level such a wild allegation without any substantial…

The statement read, “On Friday 10th February, 2023 at about 18:20 hours, PDP gubernatorial candidate was at Maigatari for a political campaign rally. “As they arrived APC secretariat, clashes erupted between the supporters of the two…
