NLC re-affirms endorsement of Peter Obi

Nigeria Labour Congress has declared its support for the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, ahead of Saturday’s presidential election. The declaration is coming after an inaugural meeting held on Wednesday by the congress’ National Administrative Council. It would be recalled that on June 22, 2022, organised labour, comprising the NLC and Trade Union Congress, declared its support in separate speeches made by their presidents at the 10th-anniversary lecture in honour of the labour veteran, the late Pascal Bayau in Abuja. Delivering his speech, NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, said that Obi is among the finest Nigerian and the…

Danjuma, Christian elders endorse Peter Obi

National Christian Elders Forum, NCEF, has endorsed the candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi to win Nigeria’s presidential election. The group of Christian elder statesmen across the country, including former Army chief, retired General T. Y. Danjuma made the announcement on Tuesday. The eminent citizens urged security agencies not to take the reports that some regions were preparing to unleash violence lightly. NCEF called on Nigerians to vote candidates based on capacity, ability, integrity, and good health, noting that “a sick country requires healthy leaders”. The statement endorsing Obi, titled “Resolutions towards 2023 elections: Think new”, was signed…

CBN fulfills promise, gives cash to INEC

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has received cash from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for election logistics. A national Commissioner of INEC disclosed this to our correspondent last night. There had been apprehension over the inability of INEC to get cash from the CBN even though its budget is a first-line charge. This was a result of the cashless policy introduced by the CBN with the support of the federal government. INEC Chairman, Mahmud Yakubu, during a visit to CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele said they needed cash rather than bank transfers to sort out many of their activities. The…
President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Nigerians to vote for Bola Tinubu, the standard bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as Nigeria’s next president in Saturday’s polls. Buhari, in a special video message issued on Sunday, described Tinubu as “reliable”, adding that the candidate of his party is a true believer in Nigeria. The president said he is aware of the hardship that some government policies meant to bring development, have caused Nigerians. He asked Nigerians to exercise further patience while giving assurance that the government is making efforts to ease the effects. “Fellow Nigerians, I want to use…
Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, presidential candidate of New Nigerian People Party (NNPP), has knocked All Progressive Congress (APC) governors criticising President Muhammadu Buhari over naira redesign policy. Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) which introduced the policy last year had fixed January 31 as deadline for spending old N200, N500 and N1000 notes in public. This had generated a huge controversy. After intense pressure, the apex bank shifted the deadline by 10 days. Some governors of the ruling party sought the intervention of the president, who told them to give him seven days to take action. But three days after meeting Buhari,…
Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, has disowned a statement on social media linking him to the endorsement of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu. The social media post also purportedly indicated that the elder statesman described the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, in uncharitable words. The statement had claimed that Soyinka said, “Quote me anywhere, Nigerians don’t need the like of Atiku and Obasanjo to lead them again. We have tested the two: Atiku is corrupt and Obasanjo is a liar. Both of them are greedy and self-centered…. “Anybody, any cabal,…
Obi, obi, obi” chants the bouncing crowd, fists in the air, as Peter Obi strides into a campaign rally after having unexpectedly taken a lead in the race to become the next president of Nigeria. The outcome of the election, scheduled for February 25th, will reverberate far beyond Nigeria’s borders. A free and fair vote in the continent’s biggest democracy would send a telling signal across Africa, where freedom is in retreat in a number of countries after a spate of coups, rigged votes and the abandonment of presidential term limits. The stakes in this race are especially high for…
Nigeria has been cursed with bad rulers. A military regime gave way to democracy in 1999, but since then elections have offered voters an ugly selection of the ancient, the incompetent and, most recently, a former military dictator. Parties have stoked ethnic divisions, intimidated their opponents and bought votes. Many candidates—federal, state and local—seek power to grab a share of the country’s oil wealth. Successive governments have been deeply corrupt. Turnout has steadily fallen. But as Nigerians go to the polls on February 25th, Peter Obi, a third-party presidential candidate, offers a measure of hope. Africa’s most populous country is…
A survey by Enough Is Enough (EiE), a civil society organisation (CSO), and SBM Intelligence, a research firm, has predicted a likely victory for Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a report published on Friday, the organisations said the election forecast was based on a survey of 11,534 respondents across all 36 states and the federal capital territory (FCT). According to the survey, Tinubu could win the popular vote depending on turnout in key states in the southwest and northwest. The report added that there is a possibility of the country experiencing its first-ever run-off…
