Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has detected several invalid registrations during the clean-up of the register from the recently-concluded voter registration exercise. The continuous voter registration exercise (CVR) ended on July 31 — thirteen months after it began. In April, the commission had said 45 percent of registrations done in 2021 were invalid. The commission has previously given reasons for invalid registrations as multiple registrations and incomplete data. In a statement on Monday by Festus Okoye, its commissioner for information and voter education, the commission said it would provide the public with details after the clean-up exercise has…

2023: It’s not your turn, Obi carpets Tinubu

Presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi, has said next year’s Presidential election is not based on ethnicity or religion, hence it is nobody’s turn. Speaking at the Labour Party Leadership Retreat in Abuja on Monday, Obi promised to sign a performance agreement with the Nigerian Labour Congress to make sure that ideas generated at the retreat are followed to the latter. Apparently referring to the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, Obi insisted that since there was no place where Christians or Muslims buy things cheaper, or Yoruba or Hausa’s have free light than others…
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says its result viewing (IReV) portal has come under attack from hackers across the world. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, said this while delivering a keynote address at a stakeholders’ conference on election result management on Friday in Abuja. The conference was organised by YIAGA Africa, a civil society organisation (CSO), to launch the election result analysis dashboard (ERAD) report agenda. Yakubu said the commission has recorded several attempts to hack the cyber security system of the result viewing portal. “Another technical concern for us is the repeated attempts to break through our cyber security system…
Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State has said Peter Obi, Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate for the 2023 election, is widely accepted. The All Progressives Congress (APC) Governor said although his support is for Bola Tinubu, his party’s candidate, “only God knows who will win”. He said this while fielding questions from State House reporters after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Umahi said the meeting was to invite Buhari for the commissioning of about N1.2 billion Governor’s Lodge at Asokoro, Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The governor, who lost the APC presidential ticket in June,…
Liz Truss’s new government will be the UK’s first without a White man holding one of the so-called four great offices of state. The new premier named Kwasi Kwarteng as Chancellor of the Exchequer, making him Britain’s first Black finance minister. Suella Braverman, who is of Indian heritage, was appointed home secretary, while James Cleverly, who identifies as mixed race, was assigned the role of top diplomat as foreign secretary. Truss herself is the third female British prime minister. Following a bruising runoff against Rishi Sunak, Truss has prioritized loyalty and ideological alignment above all. She built her campaign on…
Liz Truss is expected to be named leader of the governing Conservative Party and Britain's next prime minister today (Monday), poised to take power at a time when the country faces a cost of living crisis, industrial unrest and a recession. After weeks of an often bad-tempered and divisive party leadership contest that pitted Truss against Rishi Sunak, a former finance minister, Monday's announcement at 1130 GMT will trigger the beginning of a handover from Boris Johnson. He was forced to announce his resignation in July after months of scandal. On Tuesday, the winner will travel to Scotland to meet…
Chileans resoundingly rejected a new constitution to replace a charter imposed by the dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet 41 years ago, dealing a stinging setback to President Gabriel Boric who argued the document would have ushered in a progressive era. With 96% of the votes counted in Sunday’s plebiscite, the rejection camp had 61.9% support compared to 38.1% for approval amid what appeared to be a heavy turnout with long lines at polling states. Voting was mandatory. The approval camp conceded defeat, with its spokesman Vlado Mirosevic saying: “We recognize this result and we listen with humility to what the…
Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan Kukah yesterday said it was important for the political actors, particularly the 2023 presidential candidates to listen to the young people, understand their frustrations, and align their agenda toward assuaging their grievances. Kukah said this was important because the passion that drove people during the 2015 elections had dissipated, and that the people had understood they were lied to “and we have all seen the consequences of religious manipulations.”Kukah, who spoke on Arise News, said: “The passion that drove people in 2015, those passions have been dissipated because people realised that…
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said Nigeria is gradually moving towards dictatorship. The former president stated this at the 70th birthday celebration of Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, held at Sheraton Hotel in Abuja. Speaking on the theme of the event, ‘Nigeria’s Unfinished Greatness: Next Steps’, Jonathan urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and united to choose leaders that will lead the nation to the promised land. He said, “The task before all of us is not to lower our guard, lest the democracy we cherish today, succumbs to threats and recedes into fascism tomorrow and there are…
