Oyo State House of Assembly on Monday removed Rauf Olaniyan as deputy governor of the state. The lawmakers quickly approved the nomination of Adebayo Lawal as replacement. Shortly after the approval, the state Chief Judge, Munta Abimbola, also inaugurated Lawal as Olaniyan’s successor. Olaniyan’s removal by the Peoples Democratic Party-dominated House followed the recommendations of the seven-man panel raised by the Chief Judge to probe allegations of financial recklessness, gross misconduct and insubordination among others levelled against Olaniyan. Governor Seyi Makinde quickly nominated Lawal, a lawyer and Chairman, Oyo State Housing Corporation, as the new deputy governor. The nomination of…
The 2022 governorship election in Osun State has come and gone but Nigerians would not forget it in a hurry. For various reasons, the election became a subject of interest. One should not expect less since it is the last off cycle governorship election before the 2023 general elections. All Progressives Congress (APC) wanted to retain its hold of the state, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was bent on extending its frontiers in the Southwest region. At the end of the day, the winner carried the day. However, some persons played key roles in the victory of Ademola Adeleke.…

In continuation of the illegal practice of vote-buying that has characterised elections in the country, many political parties participating in today’s governorship election in Osun State have devised new strategies to induce voters, findings by Saturday PUNCH revealed. Our correspondents gathered that in spite of serial denials by the parties, the ruling All Progressives Congress and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party have concluded plans to pay between N2,000 and N10,000 per vote. It was also learnt that the parties had since Tuesday distributed the money to the wards and polling units to avoid being stopped by security agencies. The PDP,…
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says continuous voter registration (CVR) will end on July 31, 2022. The commission made the decision at an extraordinary session which took place on Friday. The electoral umpire said the exercise has also been extended to eight hours daily — from 9am to 5pm — instead of the current duration of six hours daily. Festus Okoye, INEC commissioner for information and voter education, said the exercise will now include weekends as against only weekdays. INEC had earlier fixed June 30 as the deadline for the ongoing CVR ahead of the 2023 elections — but the…
Samuel Kanu-Uche, prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria (MCN), says he will only support a presidential candidate who doesn’t engage in vote-buying. He spoke on Friday in Enugu at the graduation ceremony of 160 members of the church from the Enugu diocese, who were trained on various vocational skills. The prelate advised Nigerians against selling their votes, adding that politicians who engage in vote-buying have nothing to offer in terms of service to the nation. He, however, did not name which candidate he would support for the presidency. “I know that most of the candidates has nothing to offer, but…
Christian political leaders within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the north say they cannot campaign for the party over the decision to field Muslims as presidential and vice-presidential candidates. On Sunday, Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of APC, unveiled Kashim Shettima, former Borno governor, as his running mate for the 2023 elections. The announcement has elicited mixed reactions from different groups across the country. The Christian leaders across the 19 northern states, in a communique issued after a meeting on Monday, expressed reservations over the APC Muslim-Muslim ticket. “As Christians within the APC, we cannot in all fairness to our…
Finally, Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has announced his running mate for the 2023 election. The announcement comes after a meeting of some APC chieftains with President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Kastina, on Sunday. Kabiru Masari stepped down from his “placeholder” position and Kashim Shettima, former governor of Borno, took his place on the party’s ticket beside Tinubu. For the first time since the historic 1993 presidential election with Moshood Abiola and Babagana Kingibe on the ticket of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), a mainstream Nigerian political party would be fielding a same-faith ticket. Many…
Rabiu Kwankwaso, presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has advised Bola Tinubu, standard-bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to take things easy. Since the former governor of Lagos state declared his intention to run for president, concerns have been raised about his health. But that has not prevented him from going around the country to consult with leaders at different levels about his presidential bid. Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Sunday, Kwankwaso said Tinubu should pay attention to his health. “If you see my friend, Bola, tell him to take it easy, take…
Taiwo Akinola, presiding Bishop of Rhema Christian Church, Otta, Ogun State, addressed a pressed conference on Saturday, July 9, 2022 on the issue of Muslim-Muslim ticket in the approaching presidential contest. Here are excerpts from the address of the respected Christian cleric: “As we gradually approach another election year, it is understandable that political activities are also getting louder and clumsier by the day. We find it needful, therefore, to bring to the front burners of our political discourse certain important views for our considerations. “Christians are positive necessities in the communities, and as such, we must be involved in…
