Presidency has clarified that it was the “criminality” being perpetrated by Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) otherwise called Shi’ites, that was proscribed and not the religion being practised by the larger numbers of peaceful and law abiding Shiites in the country. Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, in a statement, said the proscription is to discourage wanton violence, murder and willful destruction of public and private property. On Friday, the government secured an ex-parte court order to proscribe the group. The court order was issued by Abuja Division of the Federal High Court.…
Governors of South East geopolitical zone, on Sunday, resolved to establish forest guards to tackle issues of insecurity in the zone and to compliment community policing programme of the federal government. They also insisted on their earlier position that there was no land for RUGA settlement in the zone, but opted to fund cattle rearing business and other forms of agricultural practices for their people interested in any of the programmes. Other resolutions of the Governors forum after their meeting in Enugu included to clear up to 50 meters into bushes along roads in their localities to have clear views…
Efforts by some state governments to obtain necessary safety and security clearances to launch Remotely Piloted Aircraft (drones) to tackle insecurity in their domains appear to be failing, no thanks to the strict conditions stipulated by Federal Government agencies responsible for granting the approvals. This is happening amid serious security challenges in various states across the country. No state government, agency, organisation or individual is allowed to launch an RPA (drone) for any reason without obtaining approval from Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, the agency regulating safety and security in the country’s airspace, and Office of National Security Adviser. Checks revealed…

Ganduje said this in Sokoto while answering questions on Federal Government’s suspension of Ruga programme. Banning us won’t work – Shi’ites

Spokesperson for the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), Mr Ibrahim Musa, said the government could not proscribe the movement, pointing out that its members were Muslims practising Islam as “revealed” by Prophet Muhammed. He said the group was neither an association nor a political party that could be proscribed by fiat. Musa, who spoke to our correspondent on Friday, noted that IMN was a mass movement and could not be made to abandon its religion just like that. Musa said, “First, we are not an organisation or association or a political party that can be proscribed by fiat.

At least 20 members of a Nigerian Shi’ite organisation have been killed this week, group spokesmen said, during a series of protests that show little sign of ending despite the increasing death toll and authorities saying they have boosted security. The death toll may be as high as 25, one spokesman said. Police did not respond to repeated attempts to reach them for comment. Members of the Shi’ite Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) have been marching in the capital Abuja calling for the release of their leader, Mr Ibrahim Zakzaky, who has been in detention since 2015 despite a court…
Meanwhile, Federal Government may have begun moves to negotiate with IMN in order to end the sect’s violent agitations for release of its leader, Mr Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, and his wife, Zeenat. However, the development had yet to be independently verified as of the time of filing this report. A senior IMN member, Mr Abdulrahman Abubakar, who confirmed the development on Friday, said the movement was waiting for the government to set up a committee that would negotiate with Shi’ite members. Abubakar, who is the coordinator, Free El-Zakzaky Campaign, explained that the representative of the European country handling the negotiations had…
