Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday said he would continue to criticise President Muhammadu Buhari until he improves his style of governance. He also said he is qualified to criticise any government policy and leader found wanting in the discharge of his or her duties. Mr Obasanjo stated this while speaking at his 82nd birthday lecture held in Abeokuta. He said this shortly after Alake of Egbaland, Mr Adedotun Gbadebo, urged him to stop criticising Mr Buhari. Obasanjo has been an unrelenting critic of Buhari and opposed his reelection bid. He had thrown his support behind Mr Atiku Abubakar, presidential…

UCH celebrates ex-CMD Alonge

University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan recently rolled out the drums to celebrate its immediate past Chief Medical Director (CMD), Mr Temitope Alonge, for meritorious service to the hospital, in a series of activities capped by a send forth dinner on Thursday, 28 February. Alonge, a professor of Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery, had been credited with wide ranging reforms and other initiatives which have enabled the institution to maintain its position as the leading tertiary hospital in the West African sub-region while also attaining global recognition as a centre of excellence in the training of medical personnel, research, and the delivery…
The U.S. and North Korea offered contradictory accounts Thursday of why the summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un broke down, though both pointed to punishing American sanctions as a sticking point in the high-stakes nuclear negotiation. President Trump, who returned to the White House Thursday night, said before leaving Hanoi that the talks collapsed because North Korea’s leader insisted that all the sanctions the U.S. has imposed on Pyongyang be lifted without the North firmly committing to eliminate its nuclear arsenal. But North Korea challenged that account, insisting it had asked only for partial sanctions relief in exchange…
Nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan face their worst tension in years over the disputed region of Kashmir, with Islamabad saying they shot down two Indian warplanes Wednesday and captured two pilots. Pakistan immediately shut down its civilian airspace in response. But how did the relations between these two Asian nations become so bad and what’s at stake in this rapidly worsening conflict that both sides say they want to de-escalate? ___ WHAT STARTED THIS LATEST TENSION? On Feb. 14, a suicide car bomber attacked a paramilitary convoy on the Indian-controlled side of Kashmir in the Himalayas, killing more than 40…
Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday offered members of parliament the chance to vote in two weeks for a potentially disorderly no-deal Brexit or to delay Britain’s exit from the European Union if her attempt to ratify a divorce agreement fails. Opening up the possibility of a delay and removing the immediate threat of a no-deal exit on March 29 marks one of the biggest turning points in the United Kingdom’s labyrinthine Brexit crisis since the 2016 referendum vote to leave the EU. In a move which pushes back the Brexit cliff edge by three months to the end of…
Vietnam hosts second summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later this week, with denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and ending sanctions against Pyongyang the main items on the table. Here are the key things that each side will be looking for at the Feb 27-28 summit in Hanoi. WHAT THE U.S. WANTS Denuclearisation of North Korea is the over-riding goal that Washington is seeking to achieve. That means elimination of all weapons of mass destruction programmes in North Korea - the production of those weapons, as well as the intercontinental ballistic missiles that…
“I eat anything I see,” says Abdul Edosa, 30, as he sits under the bridge in the sprawling Nigerian commercial metropolis of Lagos, where he sleeps. “I beg money from people -- anything they give me, I eat.” Edosa’s is a familiar voice in the country with the world’s largest number of extremely poor, which the United Nations defines as living on less than $1.90 a day. The estimated figure now is 87 million people, or almost half the population of Africa’s biggest oil producer, and unless something dramatic happens, it’s going to get much bigger. While poverty in India,…

SSS issues disclaimer on former boss, Lawal Daura

State Security Service on Tuesday warned the public to desist from engaging its disgraced former director-general, Mr Lawal Daura, on its behalf. The secret police says it has been inundated with insinuations that Daura still wields influence in its internal affairs, months after he was fired from office. Daura, appointed in 2015 by President Muhammadu Buhari, was fired on August 7, 2018, by then-Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, after ordering a controversial siege to the National Assembly in an alleged bid to force a leadership change. Daura was initially placed in a police detention, but was released a few days later…
