More than 2,000 people have fled southern Cameroon and entered Nigeria over the past two weeks, fallout from renewed oppression of Angolophone Cameroonians in the predominantly French-speaking country, United Nations refugee agency said on Thursday. United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is now preparing a "very conservative" contingency plan for as many as 40,000 people fleeing Cameroon, Antonio Jose Canhandula, the agency's representative to Nigeria, told Reuters in an interview in Abuja. The Presidency on Wednesday said People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had no moral right to level any accusations against the current government in respect of Mr Abdulrasheed Maina, embattled former head of the presidential team on pension reforms. In a press release, Mr Garba Shehu, senior special assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, described Maina as one of the monsters created by the former PDP government, and which are still rearing their ugly heads long after the Party was soundly defeated in the 2015 elections. “Over and over again, the President Buhari government has pointed out that the administration’s…
Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday pushed back against attempts to link him to the raging Maina scandal. Mr. Jonathan said the fact that efforts are being made to link him to the return and reinstatement of Mr Abdulrasheed Maina underscored how “uncoordinated and rudderless” the Buhari administration had become. “Are they saying it is President Jonathan that flew him back into Nigeria and promoted him in two levels ahead of where he was as at 2013 when he fled the from civil service?” Jonathan’s spokesperson, Mr Ikechukwu Eze, asked Wednesday night. “They should stop insulting Nigerians or seeing them…
The family of embattled former chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Mr Abdulrasheed Maina, has said he was invited by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to assist it in reforming the pension sector. The Presidency has however dismissed this claim as “a freshly minted falsehood,” adding that “The family that made that claim simply wanted to be ridiculous. Please ignore them.” Spokesman for the Maina family, Mr Aliyu Maina, flanked by Salihu Maina and Ladan Abdullahi, addressed the media yesterday in Kaduna, where he promised to expose the cabal at the presidency responsible for their son’s…
