Buhari appeals for unity as Atiku rejects vote

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday defended his sweeping win of a second term as free and fair and appealed to a “common love of country” as his top challenger vowed to go to court with allegations of fraud. Mr Buhari was declared the clear winner by nearly 4 million votes as citizens of Africa’s largest democracy gave him another chance to tackle gaping corruption, widespread insecurity and an economy limping back from a rare recession. Runner-up in last Saturday’s presidential election, Mr Atiku Abubakar, has provided more reasons why he is rejecting the result of the election. Abubakar, candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), lost by over 3 million votes to President Muhammadu Buhari, according to the electoral commission, INEC. Mr Buhari, according to the electoral body, scored 15,191,847 votes. Abubakar garnered 11,262,978 votes to finish as runner-up. INEC on Wednesday issued certificate of return to Buhari and his running mate, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. Aisha Buhari hosts women to victory celebration

Wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, on Wednesday hosted some women leaders to a low key celebration to commemorate the second term victory of husband, Mr Muhammadu Buhari. Independent National Electoral Commission on Monday started announcement of results of Saturday’s presidential election. As of the time of filing this report, INEC had announced result in 10 states and Federal Capital Territory.
