Conduct credible elections, US tells INEC

United States has called for a credible process that reflects the will of the people. US government made the call in a statement by Secretary of State, Mr Michael Pompeo, on Thursday evening. Pompeo urged Independent National Electoral Commission to resist pressure and intimidation in carrying out its duties. He also called on security agencies to provide an environment conducive for Nigerians to perform their civic duties. He said anybody found interfering with the electoral process or inciting violence must be brought to book. He also urged Nigerians to use the elections to consolidate on the country’s place as a…
Supreme Court has nullified a ruling of Court of Appeal which allowed All Progressives Congress to field candidates in Rivers State in the general elections. In a decision on Friday, the court said the appellate court failed to invoke relevant sections of the law in voiding the decision of Federal High Court barring the party from participating in elections in the state. A faction of APC in the state had challenged the decision of the high court at Court of Appeal Court. The court questioned the basis upon which the appeal court reached its ruling and set the decision aside…
Ahead of next Saturday’s elections, Independent National Electoral Commission has created additional 57,023 voting points to address the large number of voters which now stands at 84 million. Information obtained by our correspondent showed that the voting points would be carved out of existing 119,973 polling units nationwide. This comes barely a month after Chairman of INEC, Mr Mahmood Yakubu, said more voting units would not be created. Yakubu had said last month, “On polling units, the commission wishes to assure the media that there is no change in the number of polling units and voting points used for 2015…

Five die at Buhari’s campaign in Taraba

No fewer than five persons died on Thursday during a stampede at Jolly Nyame Stadium in Jalingo, Taraba State capital, during presidential rally of All Progressives Congress. An eyewitness, Mr Tanko Yusuf, told one of our correspondents that the stampede happened as President Muhammadu Buhari was entering the stadium and the party’s supporters, locked outside, were trying to catch a glimpse of the President. He stated, “I was standing at the popular stand of the stadium when suddenly I saw some people going down and being trampled upon by a mammoth crowd who forced their way into the stadium as…
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said its decision on participation of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State election still stands. This, the commission said, is because both sensitive and non-sensitive material for the elections have already been dispatched to states in readiness for the polls. In preparation for the February 16 Presidential and National Assembly elections, INEC had released the official list of participating parties, excluding APC in Rivers and Zamfara States. This was in obedience to a court order given based on the parallel primaries and dispute within APC in Rivers State. However, four days ago, an…
Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State has threatened that foreign powers planning to interfere in next week’s elections would “leave Nigeria in body bags.” But in swift reaction, European Union Election Observation Mission said its election observers are impartial, did not interfere in the electoral process and operated, according to a strict code of conduct. This is coming as the Presidency said last night that the governor spoke in defence of national interest when he warned foreigners against interfering with internal affairs of Nigeria. Mr El-Rufai made the comments in a live interview on NTA Wednesday. The governor was responding…
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says no one can use the identification number on Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) to comprise the smart card reader machine on Election Day. INEC Chairman, Mr Yakubu Mahmood, stated this at a forum tagged, “Women National Dialogue with INEC Chairman”, organised by European Centre for Electoral Support (ECES) with INEC on Wednesday in Abuja. Mahmood was responding to allegations that some party agents were collecting PVCs’ identification numbers in exchange for money. He maintained that there was no way anybody could compromise the integrity of the process simply by knowing the voter identification number of…
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to extend collection of Permanent Voters Card (PVCs) by three days. Director of Media and Publicity of PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, said in a statement on Wednesday that the demand was predicated on reports across the nation that some “compromised INEC officials” at the collection centres were deliberately refusing to issue PVCs to voters. “PDP believes that this deliberate refusal to release PVCs is part of the wider plot by APC to disenfranchise millions of Nigerians and frustrate their eagerness to vote out President Muhammadu Buhari…
President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday made another gaffe, something fast becoming a trademark of the presidential campaign rally of All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking in Ekiti State during the day’s campaign rally, the President said he assumed office in 2005 - the latest in a string of gaffes that include inventing the word ‘governotorial’, handing the party’s flag to someone entirely different from the recipient, saying he came to office on May 19, 2015, and mixing up the years during which he was Petroleum Minister. “Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, there is hardly anything new that I can tell you,” Buhari…
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Mr Atiku Abubakar yesterday received a major boost to his ambition with the leadership of five major socio-cultural groups endorsing his candidacy ahead of February 16 election. Coming under the auspices of Nigeria Leaders and Elders Forum, leaders of Afenifere, Northern Elders Forum, Ohaneze Ndigbo, Middle Belt Forum and the Pan Niger Delta Forum said they were endorsing Abubakar for the presidential election because they believed that among all the presidential candidates, he has what it takes to lead the country back on track and place it where it should be in the comity…
