Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Cross River State on Monday issued a Certificate of Return to Mrs Stella Nkoro of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as winner of November 17 bye-election into Ikom II State Constituency. State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr Frankland Briyai, said Nkoro was the only candidate that stood for the election and was, therefore, declared winner. The seat became vacant following the death of Mrs Nkoro’s husband, Simon Nkoro, last August. Mrs Nkoro now becomes the second member in 2018 to take her late husband’s seat in Cross River House Assembly. “The bye-election was not contested…
West Africa Network for Peace building (WANEP) Nigeria has launched Online National Early Warning System (NEWS) Platform and ArcGIS 360 mobile application as part of measures to prevent violence and other threats to the 2019 general elections. Speaking during the launch and training of 80 Election Conflict Monitors in Abuja, WANEP Executive Director, Mr Chukwuemeka Eze, said despite the widespread success of 2015 general elections, there were reports of over 60 violent incidences resulting in 58 deaths and wanton destruction of properties. This according to him necessitated the series of activities by the organisation partnering with ECOWAS, African Union (AU)…
Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, Mr Mahmood Yakubu, has said that primaries conducted by the various political parties ahead of 2019 elections are some of the “most acrimonious” in the nation’s history. He added that the commission had already been joined in 396 pending cases in various courts across the country over the conduct of party primaries and nomination of candidates. He noted that there would likely be more court cases, given the over 300 requests for Certified True Copies of documents from the commission, which he said was a prelude to more court actions. He also said the…
Post-primary crises in All Progressives Congress worsened on Thursday as more defections hit the party. The defections occurred three days to the deadline given to political parties by Independent National Electoral Commission for substitution of candidates. It was gathered that the party, which ended its governorship primaries on October 5, had been striving to solve some of the crises before the December 2 deadline for the substitution of governorship and houses of assembly candidates. The plan of the party, it was learnt, was to accommodate interests of members, who were aggrieved by its primaries. But development on Thursday indicated that…
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar will not get a United States visa – if the Federal Government has its way. The government yesterday advised United States against granting visa to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Mr Abubakar. To the government, issuing a visa to Abubakar will amount to the creation of an impression that the US Government will be favouring a candidate over the other in the forthcoming 2019 poll. There are indications that Abubakar’s visa application is still being processed by US Embassy. The protest of the government came against the backdrop that Abubakar was alleged to have…

President Muhammadu Buhari has stressed that if anyone is displeased with the way and manner anything has been done, and feels deprived of his/her rights, then such a person is at liberty to approach the courts for redress.
