2019: US warns of looming violence in Nigeria

United States Government has expressed fear that Nigeria’s general elections scheduled for 2019 are likely to be characterised by violence. It said the conduct of the elections could have significant consequences for the democratic trajectory of Nigeria, West Africa, and the entire continent. Presidential Candidate of Social Democratic Party, (SDP), Mr Donald Duke, says he will appeal the judgement removing him as the party’s presidential flag bearer. Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Friday declared Mr Jerry Gana, a former Minister of Information, as presidential candidate of SDP. Duke had been declared as presidential candidate of the party after the primary election held in October 2018 in which Gana was also an aspirant. Daniel Agbolade Ahead of 2019 general elections, gubernatorial candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Mr. Seyi Makinde, Friday in Ibadan unveiled Mr. Rauf Aderemi Olaniyan, as his running mate. A Special Appeal Panel set up by President of Court of Appeal, Mrs Zainab Bulkachuwa, to handle the protracted legal tussle in Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has struck out an appeal by factional chairman of the party, Mr Flag-Amachree Ojukaiye. Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has introduced a new measure on ballot paper handling at polling units to check vote buying in 2019 general elections.
