Nigeria's first presidential election with a generation of voters who have only known democracy takes place next weekend. Up until 20 years ago, the country was led by a succession of military rulers or short-lived civilian administrations. But has a democratic era delivered for young people? Some 18 to 20-year-olds in Lagos and Abeokuta spoke to the BBC: 'Nigerian politics is messed up' Emmanuel Odumade, artist, 19 When it comes to the elections, I did register to vote. But I won't lie, the registration process was so stressful, and we had to wait for two days to get the card.…

Supreme Court has nullified a ruling of Court of Appeal which allowed All Progressives Congress to field candidates in Rivers State in the general elections. In a decision on Friday, the court said the appellate court failed to invoke relevant sections of the law in voiding the decision of Federal High Court barring the party from participating in elections in the state. A faction of APC in the state had challenged the decision of the high court at Court of Appeal Court. The court questioned the basis upon which the appeal court reached its ruling and set the decision aside…

No fewer than five persons died on Thursday during a stampede at Jolly Nyame Stadium in Jalingo, Taraba State capital, during presidential rally of All Progressives Congress. An eyewitness, Mr Tanko Yusuf, told one of our correspondents that the stampede happened as President Muhammadu Buhari was entering the stadium and the party’s supporters, locked outside, were trying to catch a glimpse of the President. He stated, “I was standing at the popular stand of the stadium when suddenly I saw some people going down and being trampled upon by a mammoth crowd who forced their way into the stadium as…
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said its decision on participation of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State election still stands. This, the commission said, is because both sensitive and non-sensitive material for the elections have already been dispatched to states in readiness for the polls. In preparation for the February 16 Presidential and National Assembly elections, INEC had released the official list of participating parties, excluding APC in Rivers and Zamfara States. This was in obedience to a court order given based on the parallel primaries and dispute within APC in Rivers State. However, four days ago, an…
Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State has threatened that foreign powers planning to interfere in next week’s elections would “leave Nigeria in body bags.” But in swift reaction, European Union Election Observation Mission said its election observers are impartial, did not interfere in the electoral process and operated, according to a strict code of conduct. This is coming as the Presidency said last night that the governor spoke in defence of national interest when he warned foreigners against interfering with internal affairs of Nigeria. Mr El-Rufai made the comments in a live interview on NTA Wednesday. The governor was responding…
