As the permutations for the 2023 Presidency begin to dominate political discourse nationwide, Kaduna State governor, Mr Nasir El-Rufai, has said the Presidency should rightly return to the Southern part of the country. Although the governor, acclaimed to be a major strategist of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, did not specify which of the southern geopolitical zones should take the Presidency in 2023, he argued that it would be unjustified for the North to seek to retain the Presidency after President Muhammadu Buhari might have completed his eight years. El-Rufai, who headed APC’s Restructuring Committee, pointed out that although…
Mahathir Mohamad unexpectedly quit as Malaysia’s prime minister on Monday, leaving the country in political turmoil, but agreed to a request by the Southeast Asian nation’s king to stay on as interim premier until a successor is named. The resignation of Mahathir, 94, broke apart a coalition with old rival Anwar Ibrahim, 72, that had scored a surprise election victory in 2018, and was not part of a pre-election promise that Mahathir would eventually cede power to Anwar. The decision, which Mahathir did not explain, followed weekend talks between members of his coalition and the opposition on forming a new…
Director General of Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) Mr Salihu Lukman, has described ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as a political party that was no longer functional due to its inability to hold regular meetings of its constitutional organs as provided by law. He also blamed part of the crisis in APC on its National Chairman, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, accusing him of being the accuser, prosecutor and judge in most of the disputes afflicting the party. “The hard truth is that as it stands today, APC is not a functional political party. None of its organs at any level is meeting…
As things stand, it seems that the politics of Edo State has been taken outside where it should be, beyond the realm of the ordinary people who may lose confidence in the system when it is time to come out to vote. Don’t you feel uncomfortable with the current scenario in the politics of your state? It is unfortunate what is going on in Edo and some of us who are critical stakeholders did our very best to try to avoid this situation. At a meeting with the governor, I personally appealed to him that this fight is not necessary.…
All Progressives Congress (APC) Thursday approached Supreme Court with a fresh application asking the apex court to reverse its judgment that voided the victory of its candidate, Mr David Lyon, in the last governorship election in Bayelsa State. APC, in the application filed on its behalf by its team of lawyers led by Mr Wole Olanipekun is praying the apex court to set aside the “wrong” interpretation given to its judgment of February 13, 2020 and the subsequent execution of the judgment by INEC, which led to the inauguration of Mr Douye Diri of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as governor.…
Supreme Court, on Tuesday, adjourned hearing of the fresh application that sacked governor of Imo State, Mr Emeka Ihedioha, filed to be restored back to the office, till March 2. The development came on a day Chief Justice of Nigeria, (CJN) Mr Tanko Muhammad assumed headship of a seven-man panel of Justices of the apex court that will hear the matter. Aside from the CJN, other justices that participated in the proceedings that led to the January 14 judgement of the apex court that removed Ihedioha and declared Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressive Congress, APC, also made a comeback…
Most chieftains of All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State have relocated to Abuja ahead of the Supreme Court review of Imo state governorship election ruling between Messers Emeka Ihedioha and Hope Uzodinma. Also, officials and aides of the Uzodinma government have equally relocated to Abuja for the same purpose. According to our correspondent’s investigation, the traffic at Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport was unusually heavy because of the number of stalwarts of both parties sighted at the airport. One of the officials of the state government agency who spoke on condition of anonymity told our…
Presidency yesterday alleged that about 2,000 people have been hired by the political opposition to protest against heads of military institutions in the country on Monday. Presidential media aide, Mr Garba Shehu, who disclosed this in a statement, warned politicians against misleading the public by inciting protests against service chiefs. Shehu said a group of politicians and beneficiaries of Boko Haram insurgency were paying people to join the planned protests against the country’s service chiefs. He urged the media to remain unbiased and discerning in their reporting, instead of becoming unwitting tools in the hands of the opposition. The statement…
Bayelsa State Governor, Mr Douye Diri Saturday visited former President Goodluck Jonathan in his Yenagoa home immediately after his inauguration as part of his plan to calm frayed nerves in the state. Diri who acknowledged that there was too much anger and bitterness in the state especially resulting from the November 16 governorship election, explained that his resolve was to ensure that all stakeholders are carried along in the governance of Bayelsa. He said his visit to the former president was the first step in the reconciliatory process, noting that he would soon be visiting elders and leaders of the…
A former managing director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NNDC), Mr Timi Alaibe, has turned into a beautiful bride overnight for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State following Friday’s swearing in of Mr Douye Diri as governor. Alaibe is being seriously courted by the party’s hierarchy and the immediate past governor, Mr Seriake Dickson to stop his ongoing litigation which they believe could truncate Diri’s tenure. The former NDDC MD who contested PDP’s governorship ticket with Diri during the primaries is currently in court seeking an order that he be declared as the validly nominated governorship candidate of the…
