Barring unforeseen disaster, Joe Biden will represent the Democratic Party against President Donald Trump this fall, the former vice president’s place on the general election ballot cemented Wednesday by Bernie Sanders’ decision to end his campaign. Biden likely won’t secure the number of delegates needed to clinch the nomination until June. But without any Democratic rivals left, a general election campaign that will almost certainly be the most expensive and among the nastiest in U.S. history is underway. “It won’t be easy. Nobody’s confused about that. But we are ready for the general election. We are ready for our standard-bearer,”…
Failure to provide enough protective equipment for frontline workers and delays over testing have been "serious mistakes" in tackling coronavirus, the new Labour Party leader has said. Mr. Keir Starmer said in an article in the Sunday Times, that ministers took too long to explain why they were "so far behind" on testing. He also called for a "national vaccine programme" against the virus. And he said ministers should publish an "exit strategy" to end the lockdown. The 57-year-old decisively won the contest to succeed Jeremy Corbyn on Saturday, defeating Lisa Nandy and Rebecca Long-Bailey in a ballot of party…
Supreme Court, on Friday, dismissed an application asking it to review its judgement which nullified the victory of the candidates of All Progressive Congress (APC) in the 2019 general elections in Zamfara State. With one out of seven justices dissenting, the court, led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mr Tanko Mohammed, held that the application by APC was an abuse of court process. The fresh application before the apex court was brought by a faction of APC led by a former governor of the state, Abdulaziz Yari. The Supreme Court had, on May 24, 2019, ruled that the APC…

Digital myths and political reality

First it was Steve Bannon; then Jared Kushner; now it is Brad Parscale. Ever since Donald Trump began persuading millions of Americans to support him while behaving as no successful politician ever had, mainstream commentators have looked for the evil genius pulling his strings. Messrs Bannon and Kushner were both auditioned for the part, but rejected, after achieving little in office besides notoriety. Now, as Mr Trump’s re-election campaign starts going full tilt, Mr Parscale is being considered. Tremulous profiles of the Trump campaign’s manager are the latest thing in political reporting. They typically start by noting his intimidating height,…
The crisis rocking All Progressives Congress (APC), got messier, yesterday as the Abuja division of the Court of Appeal stayed the execution of the ruling of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) suspension of Mr Adams Oshiomole. It came even as a Federal Capital Territory High Court granted an interim order allowing Mr Victor Giadom, acting national secretary, leave to act as national chairman. In a bench ruling delivered by a three-man panelof the appellate court led by Mr Abubakar Yahaya, yesterday, the court ordered a stay of execution of the FCT high court’s order. A panel…
A revolt by some governors of All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday led to the postponement of the controversial National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party. The aggrieved governors took on the Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), Kebbi State Governor Atiku Bagudu for issuing an illegal resolution to remove APC National Chairman, Mr Adams Oshiomhole. They declared that the NEC meeting was illegally convened, vowing not to attend it or allow it to hold. They urged Bagudu to lead them to President Muhammadu Buhari having resolved that the NEC meeting should not hold because it was illegally…
A former Deputy National Chairman (South) of All Progressives Congress, Mr Segun Oni, has begun the process of dumping the party along with his supporters for Peoples Democratic Party(PDP). Oni, a former Ekiti State governor on PDP ticket, said he decided to leave APC due to the shabby treatment being meted out to him and his supporters. Oni said he had commenced the process of rapprochement with critical stakeholders in the Ekiti State chapter of PDP such as the former governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, and Mrs Biodun Olujimi, a serving senator, about his resolve to return to the party. He…
As the crisis plaguing ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) festers, national leader of the party, Mr Bola Tinubu, has declared support for the embattled national chairman, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, even as he called on party faithful to shelve their individual ambitions and help the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration achieve his programmes. In a statement yesterday Tinubu linked the crisis in the party to some members who have launched their 2023 political aspirations, warning that their actions were detrimental to the party and country. “In a well-structured society, people come to understand that the time for politics is seasonal, it is…
Intrigues and maneuvering have continued amongst political actors as the fate of the embattled national chairman of governing All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Adams Oshiomhole, still hangs in the balance. Some forces within APC, amongst them, governors, ministers and party stalwarts, have been pulling the strings on how to oust Oshiomhole as national chairman of the party on alleged account of his highhandedness in running the affairs of the party. Already, there is palpable anxiety within the camp of supporters of the embattled national chairman ahead of the March 17 emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting. Deputy national secretary of…
High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja has restrained National Legal Adviser of All Progressives Congress, Mr Babatunde Ogala; National Publicity Secretary, Mr Lanre Issa-Onilu; and Mr Waziri Bulama from taking any steps to disrupt the meeting of APC National Executive Committee, convened by the party’s National Working Committee and scheduled for March 17. The court, in a ruling by Mr S.U. Bature, made the restraining order on Wednesday following an ex parte application by Mr Mustapha Salihu. The court also made an order “compelling the 4th defendant (APC) to give effect to the resolution of the National Working…
