Jeremy Corbyn said Labour had a "very disappointing night" and he would not fight a future election. Labour have lost seats across the North, Midlands and Wales in places which backed Brexit in 2016. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the public outburst by First Lady, Mrs Aisha Buhari has further exposed President Muhammadu Buhari’s incompetence. The party, in a statement on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, said the development has also exposed Mr Buhari’s failure to lead and enforce an organized governance structure. The party said Aisha’s statement that some persons in the Villa took presidential decisions without consulting Buhari showed that the nation’s governance system had been “ceded to the chaotic and selfish whims of a cabal.” PDP urged Buhari to put his house in order and save the…

Programme Director of European Centre for Electoral Support, Ms Maria Mauro, has said the level of poverty in a number of third world countries, Nigeria inclusive, makes it difficult to limit electoral crimes. She said this in Abuja on Wednesday during the public presentation of a report by a non-governmental organisation, NESSACTION, on the recently concluded governorship elections in Bayelsa and Kogi states. “It is very difficult to limit some of the electoral crimes (observed in the two states) when the socio-economic situation of the people is poor,” Mauro said. She commended Independent National Electoral Commission for taking some steps…
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it has challenges prosecuting electoral offenders. INEC Chairman, Mr Mahmood Yakubu, listed the challenges in his remark at the commission’s regular meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Tuesday in Abuja. Yakubu said while INEC was at the moment saddled with the responsibility of prosecuting electoral offenders, it had no capacity to arrest offenders and conduct investigation “without which successful prosecution is impossible.” “Over the years, we have worked closely with Nigeria Police. Since 2015 we have received a total of 149 case files, including 16 cases arising from 2019 general election,” he…
Kano State Governor, Mr Abdullahi Ganduje, on Monday sent a fresh bill to the state House of Assembly to create four new emirates in Kano. This is coming days after a high court sacked the recently created emirates and emirs. The court said the Kano Assembly did not follow due process in creating the new emirates. Ganduje, however, appears determined to create the new emirates despite the opposition by many Kano residents. Many observers believe the move is Ganduje’s effort to weaken Emir of Kano, Mr Muhammadu Sanusi, who had been critical of the government. The state’s commissioner of information,…
