President Muhammadu Buhari says he will not seek a third term in office at the end of his second term in 2023. The Nigerian Constitution sets a two-term limit for the president and state governors, but that has not stopped speculations that Mr Buhari may want to stay beyond 2023. Former president, Mr Olusegun Obasanjo, was accused of pursuing a third term agenda in 2006 until Senate threw out a constitutional amendment bill promoted by his associates. Speaking on Friday at a meeting of National Executive Committee (NEC) of ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the party’s national secretariat in…
Reprieve has come the way of All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, after he got vote of confidence during APC National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and survived the impeachment threat hanging over his head. Although, unconfirmed report claimed that President Buhari walked out of the meeting when it became rowdy, the meeting, which was the shortest ever, appeared tensed on Friday, when anti and pro-Oshiomhole protesters grounded activities along the road leading to the party’s national secretariat, resulting in security agents firing teargas to disperse the protesters. Although, Oshiomhole’s arch-rival and governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki,…
Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) and Ekiti Governor, Mr Kayode Fayemi, has restated his call for restructuring of the country. He maintained that a fundamental restructuring is an “unavoidable step for the creation and sustenance of a participatory, consensus oriented, accountable, responsive and equitable national governance based on respect for the rule of law.” Fayemi explained that his party, All Progressives Congress (APC) included restructuring in its 2015 and 2019 manifestoes and has been working towards it in a bid to use its platform to address the perceived structural imbalance. The restructuring, he said, must address issues like writing…

Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr Seriake Dickson, has said leaders of All Progressives Congress are using the image of former President Goodluck Jonathan to give legitimacy to the alleged electoral fraud the party committed during the just-concluded governorship election in the state. Dickson, who stated this during a press conference in Yenagoa on Tuesday, said the move was a strategy designed by APC leaders to justify the irregularities and the takeover of Bayelsa “by force.” Some APC leaders, including governor-elect, Mr David Lyon; Governor of Jigawa State, Mr Abubakar Badaru; Governor of Kebbi State, Mr Atiku Bagudu; and Minister of…
President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday advised Peoples Democratic Party and other parties not satisfied with results of governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states to seek redress in court. Buhari gave this advice shortly after Independent National Electoral Commission declared Kogi State Governor and candidate of All Progressives Congress, Mr Yahaya Bello, winner of Saturday governorship election in the state. APC candidate in Bayelsa State, Mr David Lyon, had on Sunday won the governorship poll in the state. Lyon polled 352,552 votes to defeat his closest rival, Mr Duoye Diri of Peoples Democratic Party, who got 143,172 votes. Buhari, in…
Before contesting Bayelsa governorship election, Mr David Perewonrimi Lyon was literally unknown to politics. He owned a security firm and held no known government position. But on Sunday, after a keenly fought election that local and international observers say was fraught with irregularities and violence, INEC declared the All Progressives Congress candidate governor-elect of the Niger Delta state, ending the Peoples Democratic Party’s 20-year reign. The electoral body said Lyon scored a total of 352, 552 votes to defeat PDP candidate, Mr Duoye Diri, who had 143,172 votes. He swept six of the eight local governments in the state. “That…

Candidate of Peoples Democratic party (PDP) in Saturday governorship election in Kogi state, Mr Musa Wada has rejected the outcome of the poll, describing it as a sham and murder of democracy. He said the results being released by the electoral umpire was not a reflection of the wishes of the people who willingly voted for PDP and its candidate in the election.
