Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed the appeal filed by Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Mr Atiku Abubakar, challenging the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in the February 23, 2019 presidential election. Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mr Tanko Muhammad, who led six other members of the apex court’s panel, delivered a three-sentence judgement which put paid to the legal dispute over the poll. The CJN, who said the reasons for the decision of the court would be made known on a date to be announced, disclosed that he and members of the panel had read all the documents and…
Britain will hold its first December election in almost a century after Prime Minister Boris Johnson won approval from parliament on Tuesday for an early ballot aimed at breaking the Brexit deadlock. After the European Union granted a third delay to the divorce that was originally supposed to take place on March 29, the United Kingdom, its parliament and its electorate remain divided on how, or indeed whether, to go ahead with Brexit. Johnson, who had promised to deliver Brexit on Oct. 31 “do or die”, demanded a Dec. 12 election after parliament - where he has no majority -…
The judiciary has resolved to keep a lid on the members of the Supreme Court panel who will hear the appeal filed by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Mr Atiku Abubakar, challenging verdict of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), which upheld the election of President Muhammadu Buhari. The appeal is scheduled for hearing on Wednesday. The appellants had approached the court shortly after the September 11 verdict with 66 reasons why the apex court should upturn the tribunal’s decision. Mr Tunde Bakare, serving overseer of Latter Rain Assembly (LRA), has sent a cryptic message to Bourdillon, saying he who stole will vomit all he has stolen before he goes. Speaking during a sermon at Latter Rain Assembly on Sunday, Bakare said the people are praising the one who stole from them, and regarding him as a generous man. The fiery preacher, who also spoke about the race to 2023, added that a truly generous man is a man who “devises generous things, and by generosity, he shall stand”. “The eyes of those who see will not be dim. The…
Centre-left opposition candidate Alberto Fernández has been elected president of Argentina in a vote dominated by economic concerns. Mr Fernández secured more than the 45% of the vote needed to win, beating conservative incumbent Mauricio Macri. Raucous crowds gathered at Mr Fernández's election headquarters to celebrate the result. The vote was held amid an economic crisis that has left a third of Argentina's population in poverty. Mr Macri had trailed behind his challenger in pre-election polls and was trounced by the opposition in primary elections in August. He conceded defeat on Sunday night. Congratulating his political rival, he said he…

Supreme Court upholds Wike’s election

Supreme Court on Friday upheld the two appeals filed by governor of Rivers State, Mr Nyesom Wike, challenging the decisions of the Court of Appeal. Mr Ejembi Eko, in delivering the lead judgment, upheld the two appeals by Wike for being meritorious. The appeals were against the decisions of the Court of Appeal, reversing two decisions of Rivers State Governorship Election Tribunal. The Appeal Court in Port Harcourt had set aside the judgement…
Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party has retained power but as a minority government, according to projections by Canada's national broadcaster, CBC. Despite some early losses in Canada's eastern provinces, the Liberals are expected to claim the most seats in parliament, giving them a second term. This federal election was seen as a referendum on Mr Trudeau, who endured a bumpy first term, tainted by scandal. His Liberals were neck-and-neck with their centre-right Conservative rivals. Mr Trudeau's weakened grip on power will force him to work with other parties to pass legislation during this next term. There are still lots of votes…
The road to Edo State Government House through the next governorship election may be stormy considering recent political happenings in the state and with some chieftains of ruling All Progressives Congress against Governor Godwin Obaseki’s move to return for a second term, SOLA SHITTU writes: It is not unusual for an incumbent governor to seek reelection for a second term in office, and so last week, Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, announced his intention to do so. Guinea erupted in protest this week over proposals to draft a new constitution that could allow President Alpha Conde to extend his legal mandate and run for a third term in 2020. If Conde tries to stay, he would be copying from an established playbook in Africa, where incumbent presidents have sought, often successfully, to remain in power by massaging, bending or outright breaking laws often meant to ensure democratic handovers of power. Below are details on how some of Africa’s longest-serving leaders have managed to stay in power, or are trying to do so, denting hopes of a dawn…
