A new report on the persecution of Christians in Nigeria has found that about 1,000 adherents of the Christian faith have been killed by Islamic militants in 2019 alone. Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART), headed by a member of the British House of Lords, Baroness Cox, discovered that believers in the North and Central region of Nigeria were the most severely affected. The group said the constant attack of “harmless” persons, especially worshipers and clerics portends danger for Christianity as it has ignited fears in clerics deployed to the northeast to work. In its end of the year report, the…

About 22 former governors are either on trial or facing investigations over corruption allegations, Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami, has said. Malami, who spoke at a meeting with journalists at his office in Abuja on Thursday, did not name the affected former governors. When asked, the minister also said he could not comment on the fate of his predecessor, Mr Mohammed Adoke, who arrived Nigeria from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and was immediately arrested by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday. The minister, who sought the support of journalists in the fight against…
Nigeria’s former attorney general was detained by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) upon his return home on Thursday, the commission said in a statement, as part of an investigation into one of the oil industry’s biggest suspected corruption scandals. EFCC’s investigation relates to the $1.3 billion (£999.54 million) sale of a Nigerian offshore oilfield known as OPL 245 by Malabu Oil and Gas in 2011. Eni SpA (ENI.MI)…

ISWAP attack kills 15 in Borno - Militia

Islamic State-aligned militants have killed 14 anti-jihadist militia and a police officer in northeast Nigeria, militia leaders told AFP Friday. Late Thursday, jihadists from Islamic State West Africa Province in more than a dozen pickup trucks fitted with machine guns stormed a security post manned by a civilian militia group in the village of Mamuri, in Borno State, according to the sources. "We lost 14 men and a mobile policeman in the fight with terrorists from ISWAP," militia leader Babakura Kolo said. "They attacked our men around 8:00 pm (1900 GMT) in 14 trucks which resulted in a hours-long fight."…
On Dec. 1, a band of assailants opened fire on worshippers at a small-town Protestant church in Burkina Faso, an impoverished West African country where the Christian minority is increasingly a target of attacks. The victims included the pastor and several teenage boys; regional authorities attributed the attack to “unidentified armed men” who, according to witnesses, got away on motorcycles. The slaughter merited brief reports by international news outlets, then quickly faded from the spotlight — not surprising in a year where attacks on places of worship occurred with relentless frequency. Hundreds of worshippers and many clergy were killed at…
An armed group that kidnapped humanitarian workers in northeastern Nigeria five months ago has claimed it killed four hostages, international aid agency Action Against Hunger said on Friday. Six people were abducted in July near the town of Damasak, Borno state, where Islamist insurgents operate. Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), which split from the militant group Boko Haram that began its insurgency in 2009, has become the dominant jihadist group in the region. The decade-long Islamist insurgency has caused the deaths of some 30,000 people and driven 2 million to flee their homes. Action Against Hunger said one…
Boko Haram has released a video showing the execution of two soldiers and a policeman, posted online late Monday by Islamic State group (IS) propaganda agency Amaq. The video, dated Sunday, was made by a branch of Boko Haram that has sworn allegiance to IS known as the Islamic State Group in West Africa (ISWAP). The Boko Haram video release came days after the militants announced the kidnapping of 14 people including two aid workers and, according to the jihadists, six members of the security forces. It shows three men in plain clothes kneeling in a field, introducing themselves as…
