Authorities of Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) and Kaduna State Railway Police Command, yesterday, confirmed the attack on an Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS). The train, which left Rigasa train station in Kaduna, at around 10 a.m. was attacked a few kilometres to Katari, about 70 kilometres to Abuja. But contrary to rumour that that attack was masterminded by gunmen, they explained that some herdsmen threw stones at the train around Katari, Kaduna State, adding that their actions may not be unconnected to the killing of six of their cows by a train last week. “This news is not correct. What happened…
It is nearly two months now since my encounter with kidnappers. While I remained in captivity, friends and colleagues fought hard to secure my freedom. As I later learned, the security forces and relevant authorities received our complaints and offered solidarity. The consensus was to negotiate and meet the terms of my captors. I have struggled since then to narrate my experience, but at each attempt, I found it difficult to put my fingers to the keyboard. Telling a personal story, especially one as horrifying as this, isn’t as straightforward as writing about people, events, and issues – the usual…
Nissan’s former CEO fled house arrest in Japan in a wild Hollywood-worthy plot — allegedly using a team of mercenaries posing as musicians to smuggle him out of the country in an instrument case, reports said. Accused embezzler Carlos Ghosn then used a relay of private jets to flee all the way from Tokyo to his family’s heavily guarded pink mansion in Lebanon, a nation which does not have an extradition treaty with Japan. “I am now in Lebanon and will no longer be held hostage by a rigged Japanese justice system,’’ the defiant former auto honcho said in a…
Details of what brought former Kaduna State Senator and civil rights activist, Mr Shehu Sani, into trouble with Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and resulting in his Tuesday’s arrest and detention, emerged last night. The vocal former lawmaker had reportedly used the name of Chairman of EFCC, Mr Ibrahim Magu, to collect $30,000 from a popular car dealer in the state with an assurance to shield him and his company from any form of inquiry by the anti-graft agency. However, it was gathered that the cash payment soon became a source of anger between Sani and the car dealer and…
Carlos Ghosn, the former chief of Nissan Motor Co. and Renault SA, unexpectedly left Japan, where he faces trial on charges of financial wrongdoing, and traveled to his homeland of Lebanon. Mr. Ghosn’s flight to a country that in 2017 put his image on a postage stamp marked a striking new development in a drama that has seen one of the world’s most prominent businessmen—an automobile executive accustomed to living between private jets and luxury residences—charged with crimes and forced to serve months in a Japanese jail cell. Now he appears to have turned himself into a celebrity fugitive. “I…
A truck bomb exploded at a busy security checkpoint in Somalia’s capital Saturday morning, killing at least 79 people including many students, authorities said. It was the worst attack in Mogadishu since the devastating 2017 bombing that killed hundreds. The explosion ripped through rush hour as Somalia returned to work after its weekend. At least 125 people were wounded, Aamin Ambulance service director Abdiqadir Abdulrahman said, and hundreds of Mogadishu residents donated blood in response to desperate appeals. President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed condemned the attack as a “heinous act of terror” and blamed the local al-Shabab extremist group, which is…
Islamist militants killed at least 10 people and took two women captive in an attack on a convoy in northern Nigeria that targeted Christians and those associated with international aid groups, witnesses said on Friday. In the Dec. 22 attack, they told Reuters, militants posing as soldiers stopped a convoy of commercial vehicles travelling towards Maiduguri in northeastern Borno state and asked passengers in English to produce identification cards. The militants separated those who they determined worked for international aid groups, were Christian or worked with the police or Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), a coalition of civilian vigilante groups…
