Six Borno towns fall to Boko Haram

Despite denials by Nigerian military, Boko Haram fighters seized Baga, Doron-Baga, Kross Kawwa, Bunduran, Kekeno and Kukawa towns of Borno State after three days of fierce battles from Wednesday to Friday last week, Daily Trust learnt from impeccable military and political sources in Maiduguri yesterday. All six towns are major population centres in Kukawa local government area of northern Borno. Lagos State chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the death of Mr Abayomi Ayeola, a member of the House of Representatives, as sad and shocking. Aiyeola (APC-Ibeju Lekki Federal Constituency) died on Sunday at a private hospital in Lagos, after a brief illness. Shehu Shagari, ex-President, is dead

A former President, Mr Shehu Shagari, is dead. Shagari, 93, died Friday evening at National Hospital Abuja after a brief illness. The death of the elder statesman was announced by his grandson, Bello Shagari, via his Twitter handle. Shagari was elected president in 1979 and led Nigeria between 1979 and 1983 on the platform of defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN). He was removed from office via a military coup in December 1983. The coup plotters eventually named Mr Muhammadu Buhari, then a Major General, as Head of State.
