The groups are the latest to join Nigeria's lucrative kidnap for ransom industry, and are quite brazen in their operations. Three countries, United States of America, India and Ghana, have written respectively to Federal Government requesting extradition of 11 Nigerians, a report has revealed. The cases for which the Nigerians are wanted in the foreign countries include money laundering, obtaining money under false pretences, fraud, as well as drug-related offences. Lagos State High Court in Igbosere on Friday convicted and jailed two hackers, who defrauded Union Bank to the tune of N2.55bn. The convicts, Abass Mohammed and Ibrahim Saidu Jogal, bagged one and three years’ imprisonment, respectively. Mr K.A. Jose, who pronounced the verdict, also ordered that a total of $464,000, a car and a landed property recovered from the convicts by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission be returned to the defrauded bank. Pirates attacked an oil production vessel off Nigeria in the early hours of Thursday and kidnapped nine Nigerian nationals, the ship’s owner BW Offshore said. The Sendje Berge ship was undergoing maintenance when the attack happened, BW Offshore’s Chief Financial Officer Staale Andreassen said. The Oslo-listed company said none of the people remaining on the vessel were injured. “We are working now with the Nigerian authorities to get those nine people safely back,” Andreassen added. Two persons have been killed and five abducted in Ekoli Edda community in Afikpo South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. Police said gunmen from neighbouring Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State were behind the attack. The two border communities have been at war over a palm plantation on their border. A French court on Monday sentenced former Prime Minister Francois Fillon to five years in jail, three of them suspended, for embezzling public funds in a scandal that wrecked his 2017 run for president. At least nine Nigerian soldiers were reported dead Saturday as suspected Boko Haram insurgents ambushed a military van escorting travellers from Maiduguri to Damboa town, witnesses and security sources said.
